Get rid of the plates, which have Not made it safer.
That's where we disagree, because bringing the speeds down has absolutely made it a lot safer for the drivers and for the fans.
You can quote one instance where a plate car got in the fence. That's possible in any race, any speed. How many people would have been killed if he were going 240 MPH?
There's no question slowing the cars down inproves safety, that's why every sanctioning body works toward that. From the top series in the world all the way down to the smallest short track, speeds have to be controlled.
Say what you want aboutthe restrictor plate, and I've said plenty under the right topic. But they have slowed down the cars.

but if it (the track)weren't banked like a slot-car track, there's no chance they'd ever reach 240.. nobody's car would put up with it.

you can't have a discussion, can you? you're saying that everyone is talking out both sides of their face- well CALL THEM OUT INDIVIDUALLY AS YOU SEE IT..
don't throw some random thread out there insulting everyones intelligence and then expect that people are only going to talk about your gigantic insult to those posters.

I think you asre taking a lot of points of view expressed by a lot of different people and conflating them in a single post to show contradiction.
Unless you can cut and paste directly contradictory quotes, i think what you have here is a lot of different people with a lot of different rules. The same person isn't saying, "Knock down the banks" and "without banks it would be another boring cookie-cutter."
What you have illustrated is the wide variety of opinions expressed on these boards.

Spin, I think that you are missing the point a little. A lot of us grew up on NASCAR. For years it was my favorite form of racing and being from PA I took a lot of heat about it. Then NASCAR got popular, then they ruined the sport. And they have lost me, but I want to come back. Some of the fixes are so bloody obvious if NASCAR would admit that they had a problem. But they won't. I want to be in the fold, but can not at this time.

There is an element of denial about the problem we have this week - from the guys on Wind Tunnel to This week in NASCAR, the people that run the track - even Chad Knaus had the audacity to look into the camera and claim that Dega was a great race with lots of action.
It wasn't a good race. The reason is simple - the soon to be crowned champion didn't have to race anyone. The other contenders had no choice but to mix it up and because of that they got taken out. Mark Martin's interview at the end said it all.
During the race, on the radios the competitors were making fun of it.
Race fans are not stupid - whether it's F1, IndyCar, or NASCAR - a crummy race is a crummy race. In this case it is clear that the race was setup to be this way by the officials.
There is an awful lot of brown nosing going on this week trying to minimize the damage - and if you ask me people need to be far more critical of NASCAR, especially the analysts and drivers.
Spencer was on TWIN yesterday complaining about the bad press the sport is getting for that wreck - but the fact is these wrecks keep happening - and there was a very serious injury in the stands the last time it happened - yet here we go again with a car flying through the air.
When and if someone gets killed, you are going to see some drastic changes, and all you defending the current situation will really be angry. NASCAR has a chance to proactively make the changes that are needed to be made, specifically in the area of the engine formula, and they seem determined not to deal with it...and that is the problem here...not the fans...not the criticism...

The best answer is for NASCAR to admit that the cars, drivers and teams have gotten plate cars to go too fast around the 2.6 mile oval. So either make substantial changes to plate track cars, smaller engines might be a start, or tear down Dega and build something different there.

Well, i part we disagree on the restrictor plate being a good way to make racing safe. It isn't safe and it isn't racing, in my opinion.
Pack racing isn't safe, but at 200 mph .... when Everyone Knows there will be a huge wreck that cripples the field, how is that "safe" or "racing"?
And you started the post specifically to insult posters who you felt were hypocritical.
No matter.
Let me ask you this: Did you think Sunday's race represented the pinnacle of NASCAR racing, and would you hope every other superspeedway race is like that?
So far as explaining NASCAR's thinking, Poston did that pretty well in his blog. He said it was a great race.
